South Hill Gymnasium - A brief History

South Hill Gym stands on South Hill and was originally built as a gym for the military garrison at Fort Regent around 1860. At around 160 years old, it is quite possibly the oldest purpose-built gymnasium in Britain. The Grade II-listed German Gymnasium in London’s King’s Cross, regarded as Britain’s oldest gym, was designed in 1865 was turned into a restaurant in 2015.
The floor of the gym is constructed of wooden blocks which had been recycled from the street paving of King Street when it was resurfaced with stone cobbles. They are the only known remaining cobbles from Jersey’s main St Helier street.
The original entrance to the gym was on the east side of the building and the original soldier’s boot scrapers exist, as does a War Department surveyor benchmark
An early photograph of South Hill Gym from 1933 shows the south extension built and two chimneys. The gym clearly predates any of the current buildings along the Havre des Pas promenade in the foreground.
